What is lactose intolerance?

If the enzyme lactase is not available in sufficient amounts in the small intestine, lactose will not be cleaved completely and therefore will be moved on into the large intestine. There lactose is fermented by intestinal bacteria, which can lead to gastro-intestinal symptoms like:

  • abdominal pain
  • flatulence,
  • indigestion
  • diarrhea

after consumption of dairy products.

  • Lactose intolerance has a prevalence of 10-30% in western population.
  • The tolerated amount of lactose highly varies.
  • People suffering from lactose intolerance develop symptoms like abdominal pain, flatulence, indigestion and diarrhea, after consumption of lactose containing food. 
  • Not every person, who cannot cleave lactose, has symptoms.
